With heavy hearts and profound love, we remember and celebrate the life of Sheran D. McCaskill, a remarkable woman whose presence was the foundation of her family and the comfort of everyone who knew her. She passed away surrounded by loving family members December 29th, 2025 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
Sheran was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 1, 1959, to Grady McCaskill and Willene Bell. To those who grew up with her and knew her well, she was lovingly known as "Snag"—a nickname understood and cherished by those who shared her early years and lifelong bonds.
Later in life, as she became an elder, Sheran was affectionately known as Nana to all those who came into her presence children and adults alike. She carried herself with a warmth, gentleness, and unconditional love that made everyone feel cared for, protected, and valued. She loved without limits and gave freely of herself, embodying the kind of compassion that only a true grandmother could provide. To many, she was more than family-she was Nana in every sense of the word
She attended I.S. 33 for junior high school and Grover Cleveland High School, later continuing her education at Medgar Evers College, where she pursued her calling in nursing profession that reflected her natural compassion and lifelong desire to care for others.
Sheran was a nurturing, strong, joyful, and deeply loving woman. She gave more than she ever receive often giving her last without hesitation. Her heart was truly gold, and caring for others was not somethings. did-it was who she was. To her family, she was the leader, the backbone, and the glue that held everyone together.
She dedicated her professional life to serving others as a Registered Nurse at Kings County Hospital, and later as a traveling nurse, extending her care and compassion wherever she was needed. Nursing was not just her career —it was her purpose.
One of Sheran's greatest prides was providing a safe, loving home for her children and grandchildren —a place filled with warmth, protection, and unconditional love. Family and friends were always her greatest priority.
She found joy in life's simple pleasures: traveling, shopping (from BJ's and Food Bazaar to Walmart, Target, Macy's, and Amazon-anything that brought her happiness, and beginning every day with her beloved light and sweet cup of hot coffee, a ritual she never missed.
Her favorite times of year were Thanksgiving and Christmas, when she could cook large meals for family and friends. Cooking was never a task for Sheran—it was an expression of love. When she was well, she prepared entire holiday meals herself, welcoming help only with preparation. Watching her cook was watching love in motion.
Sheran found deep joy in the everyday moments she shared with those she loved most. She especially enjoyed watching boxing matches with her two sons, Donnell and Bryan, moments filled with laughter, conversation, and connection.
She also cherished quiet time at home watching television with her granddaughter Brianna McCas alongside Brianna's mother, Keesha Ghee, who lived in the home and was like a daughter to her. 1 they shared countless hours of television, coffee, conversation, and companionship simple routines that brought comfort and closeness.
Sheran also shared meaningful moments with Shayla Grant, the mother of her granddaughter Brielle McCaskill. Though they knew one another for a shorter time, their bond was genuine and warm. They often shared afternoon coffee together, and Shayla would lovingly bring coffee whenever she dropped Brielle off to visit her Nana-small moments that reflected mutual respect, care, and connection.
Sheran shared a special bond with her daughter, Shavennah McCaskill, with whom she lived and spent much of her time. She loved shopping, traveling, laughing, and simply enjoying life together. Their bond was filled with warmth, joy, and friendship, and the time they spent together meant everything to her.
Sheran showed love through time, food, generosity, and unwavering support. She spent time with you. cooked for you, helped you-sometimes financially, even when it meant giving her last. Love, to her, was always action.
As her son Donnell shares, "There was not a single day we didn't speak. Every morning we said good morning to each other. I will miss the sound of her voice and the taste of her cooking. Since she left, my home has felt empty. Wherever Sheran was, that was home.”
