Rutha Oates McMackin, 85, was born on May 29, 1938, in York, South Carolina to the late Emma Bell McGill Lee and Edward Oates. She departed this earthly life and transitioned to receive her wings at her Heavenly Father's Home on Saturday, December 9, 2023.
Ruth was a humble and faithful servant who gave her life to Christ as a young adult. "Ruth" became a member of Zoar AME Zion church at a young age. She loved to serve the Lord in many ways. She served as an Usher and Usher Board President, member of the Hymn choir, co-founder of the Young Adult Choir at Zoar. She ran for the church's "Mother of the Year" fundraiser and won first place. Ruth loved to sing, therefore, she became a member of the Singing Convention alongside her husband, Alonzo McMackin.
Rutha Mae, as her husband Alonzo affectionately called her, never had any children of her own. She was a mother to many as well as an aunt to a host of nieces and nephews. She loved to cook for her husband and her family. Her husband loved her home-made biscuits, and her family devoured her German chocolate cakes. Rutha Mae loved flowers and working in her yard while her husband worked in their garden.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Alonzo Mason McMackin of sixty-one years, one brother Elize Le Bell, three sisters, Martha ALee, Lotie L. Rawlinson, and Emma
She leaves behind to cherish her memory and legacy, one brother Eddie Oates Jr of Clinton, Maryland, three sisters Eliza Virgina Lee of Largo, Maryland, Gleender LLe of York, South Carolina, and Barbara N. Cooley of Largo, Maryland.
Funeral Services for Mrs. McMackin were held December 17th, 2023 at Zoar AME Zion Church Blacksburg, SC. Burial took place at the church cemetery.
